Building draw units

I have spent several hours today building eight wooden IKEA three-draw storage units. I bought these some years ago when I first contemplated reorganising my toy/wargames room, but I never got around to putting them together. The units were fairly easy to put together although I did manage to hit my hand several times with the hammer.

The storage draws are ideal for storing complete wargames units, and each draw can hold several hundred 15mm figures or a couple of Megablitz Russian Infantry Corps/German Infantry Divisions.

At present the bottoms of the draws do not have any steel paper fixed to them, but I hope to add some as soon as I can. Although the storage units are not likely to be used to transport figures to 'away' games, I like to affix magnetic tape to the bottom of multi-figure and vehicle bases and this ensures that the bases do not move about in the draws when the storage units need to be moved.

  1. Nice! I might have to get some of those myself for the Man Cave

  2. Hi Bob,

They are really useful - I have a couple of the version with three smaller drawers as the top level; two larger in the middle and the largest across the bottom.

It certainly looks like a major restructuring of the den is being undertaken!

    All the best,

  5. Paul of the Man Cave,

I think that IKEA still manufacture and sell them (or something very like them), and because they came in 'kit' form they were not very expensive.

    All the best,

    Bob

  6. David Crook,

I find that they are just the right size and shape for wargaming ... and look nicer than the alternatives (e.g. box files laid flat).

By changing the style and type of storage I have used, I seem to have ended up with more storage in less space. The end result should be a lot easier to use ... I hope!

    All the best,

    Bob

  7. Tradgardmastare,

I must admit that I wish that I had put these together when I originally bought them ... and that I had bought more of them.

I hope to end up with most of my figures stored in them. The Hexon II terrain I use will then be stored in stackable pine boxes and my Heroscape terrain will be in plastic see-through Really Useful Boxes.

    All the best,

    Bob

  8. Adelaide Gamer,

This particular IKEA product comes in 'kit' form and the construction is 'explained' in a series of images. What they don't tell you is that you need a hammer and screwdriver to assemble them ... neither do they tell you that the nails they supply will bend if you look at them, let alone hit them with a hammer!

They do look nice now that they are finished ... but my figures do exhibit evidence of their construction.

    All the best,

    Bob

  9. These do look both tidy and useful. Do the drawers come out easily so that they can be used as a tray to carry the figures to the table?

I wonder if neat labels to indicate the contents of each drawer would deface the look?

  10. I wish my IKEA store wasn't so far away ( 140 miles); those look like some nice storage boxes.
It's always interesting to me to find how much "extra" space I have when things a properly organized.

  11. Ross Mac,

The draws come right out and can be carried around without any difficulty ... which is one reason that I want to line them with steel paper.

I have thought of adding labels to the outside of each draw, but until I can find a supply of 'easy peel' labels to use, that idea will have to stay on the 'back burner'.

    All the best,

    Bob

  12. Brigadier Dundas,

I only visit our local IKEA store about once a year, but when I do I am always on the lookout for useful storage ideas.

Keeping things tidy is a great way to ensure that all your available storage space is properly used ... but over the years it has been my experience that tidiness is not usually a high priority for most wargamers!

    All the best,

    Bob
